How can you best care for your plants?

Make sure you have the right soil

Good potting soil is important for houseplants. This is due to the limited space in the pot and the rapid depletion of nutrients and water. Quality potting soil retains water longer and the nutrients remain in the soil longer.

Provide adequate nutrition

This ensures that your houseplant stays beautiful and healthy. You give the nutrition weekly during the growth period, from February to October.

Water regularly

How much water you give depends on the type of plant. If you have a plant with leathery leaves, give it less water than if you have a houseplant with lush soft leaves. Stick your finger in the soil and feel how wet the soil is. Does the soil feel dry? Then your houseplant could use a sip of water.

Place the houseplant in a light spot

Houseplants are best placed in front of a window facing west or east. Make sure that a plant is not in direct full sunlight. Do you have a window facing south? Then be careful. For shade plants, a window facing north is good. Do not place the plant too far from the window, because otherwise they will not get enough light. In winter, you may also need to place a houseplant a little closer to the window for more light. Read more tips on caring for houseplants in winter.

Ensure a constant room temperature

A houseplant likes to be in a place where it is between 15 and 25 degrees. In these temperatures the plant feels at its best.

Turn the houseplant occasionally

The plant grows towards the light. By turning the houseplant every now and then you prevent it from growing crooked.

Ensure good humidity

For example, place a saucer with water on the heater. This will increase the humidity. You can also spray houseplants to increase the humidity.

Repot a houseplant into a larger pot

Repotting has several advantages. Firstly, it stimulates growth. In addition, more soil can be absorbed in the pot and therefore more water. Another advantage is that you have less chance of stagnant water in the pot, due to the larger amount of soil. Repotting also prevents the plant from suffocating. The roots of a houseplant function well with air and fresh soil is airier. If you want to repot, do this in the spring. Use our handy potting and care instructions for repotting your houseplants.
